Coronation Street is reportedly going to kill off Rita Tanner in a shock new storyline.
The Sun claims that the soap veteran – played by Barbara Knox – will be diagnosed with a brain tumour later this autumn. In the show at the moment those closest to Rita fear she’s suffering from dementia because she keeps forgetting things.
But according to new reports, it’s going to turn out to be even worse as the pensioner, who has been on the cobbles for over five decades, is told she has a brain tumour and then refuses to have life-saving surgery.
In a recent Radio Times interview the soap’s top boss, Kate Oates, revealed there’s a storyline coming up in the new year that scares her.
So news of Rita’s demise is sure to spark speculation that this is the storyline Kate was talking about, as killing off one of the soap’s most iconic characters is a bold move to take.
A Corrie mole told the Sun: “It has been suggested she might have dementia, but she does not. In fact, she will be diagnosed with a tumour and her doctors will say there is a serious risk she will die if they don’t remove it.
“But Rita is terrified that she could not know who she is, or recognise her friends. All the indications are that this will end tragically.”
