It wasn’t so long ago that Peter Barlow was planning to banish Daniel Osborne as punishment for attempting to murder Ken Barlow.
But this Christmas the shoe is on the other foot as Peter proves his just as dark as Daniel when he sets out to murder Billy Mayhew.
Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel, says his character is shocked – and slightly smug – when he finds out what Peter has done.
He said: “Daniel doesn’t know hardly any of that. There is a scene in which Daniel and Peter are together, Peter’s sat there and thinks he’s a murderer, he thinks he’s killed someone.
“And it’s interesting because a year ago, that was Daniel and Peter told him he never wanted to see him again, except it wasn’t his dad, it was the vicar.
“But he went to the exact same place that Daniel went, and I think that’s what Daniel was thinking – ‘not so high and mighty now are you, now that you’ve nearly killed someone, there’s plenty of room in this boat with me’.”
Speaking of his relationship with Ken, Rob added: “Daniel’s still guilty, obviously, because of what he did.
“That’s a little bit of a safety mechanism I think, because no matter how annoyed or slighted he’s been, he knows what lies beyond those indignations.
“He knows that if he goes there, and is that, ‘I feel like I need this’, then poor Ken’s going to end up at the bottom of the stairs and a perfectly good book will be ruined.
“So he’s conciliatory with Ken, but he still finds him pious and not connected. He’s so focused on holding his family together, that he doesn’t really fully know all the people in it.”
