Emmerdale’s Chris Bisson has revealed he held crunch talks with the soap’s top bosses about his future fearing they had hit the end of the road for Jai Sharma.
It wasn’t so long ago that the villager was locking people in shipping containers and generally being one of the most devilish residents of Emmerdale.
And Chris admits he feared that writers had boxed his alter ego into a corner giving him no where else to go but out of the show. But after talks with his boss, Chris says they realised they could redeem the character from the dark path he had found himself on.
He told SoapSquawk: “There were conversations being had about where we had gone with the character; very frank and honest conversations with me and the producer saying ‘have we gone too far now and it is time to call it a day or do we redeem him?’
“Ultimately on the trajectory that he was on, he was unsustainable on the show but we came to the conclusion that actually he wasn’t a bad character – he came in as a much nicer character and he did go off the rails but we have really pulled him back and that’s lovely to play.
“It’s also lovely to play a long term story – dealing with drugs is important and they are long term problems and issues for anyone who has ever had them.
“I’m really pleased that we have played this story out much longer and we see his struggle day to day. Nell provides an opportunity to see that he still has those moments and it’s not going away – it’s still affecting his family a year to 18 months on.
“He hits the bottle, he’s bought some drugs – he hasn’t taken them but that vulnerability is always there and it requires a lot of inner strength for him to hold it together.
“Maybe, Nell is a good reason for him to hold it together – the best one he has had so far, anyway.”
