Emmerdale’s Natalie J Robb has become a screen mum after her character Moira Dingle gave birth to a baby boy.
But while she told Emma Barton that Pete Barton is the father, it remains to be seen whether she’s telling the truth.
Here Natalie admits the baby is a life changing for Moira and the paternity remains unanswered…
Moira has discovered Emma killed James, how has that made her feel?
Moira barely had time to register Emma’s revelation as minutes later they were both engulfed in flames. But I think she was shocked to hear it.. I think Emma’s behaviour makes sense now she knows what she’s been hiding.
Did Moira know she was pregnant?
No.. Moira had no idea she was pregnant. So when she went into labour in the barn it was the first hint. On reflection she has recently felt tired but that was her only true symptom. I expect, people won’t probably believe that she had no symptoms but when I was doing research I was in contact with a really lovely lady called Caroline. Who suddenly went into a surprise labour much like Moira. It was not her first child either so she had been pregnant a few times before but despite this Caroline also didn’t know she was pregnant until she went into labour. She also had just felt a bit tired much like Moira and she explained her figure didn’t really change so her bump wasn’t visible so she had no awareness until she went into labour. It was fascinating for me to talk to her as she really helped me understand how Moira will potentially feel after this shock birth.
When did you find out she would be pregnant after sleeping with both Pete and Cain in the same week at Christmas?
I knew for definite around four months ago. But the story team had cooked it up last year but it was set into proper script/story document form later. It was always the plan.
Does Moira believe that Pete’s the dad?
I think she just said that to get Emma to rescue her. It was the only way to stop her shutting her in the barn to die. I think Moira is unsure whose it is…Cain’s or Pete’s.
How did you feel about the birth scenes?
We had a midwife and nurse on set to help. Because Moira was asphyxiated from all the smoke she couldn’t scream or cry with the pain. It was good to have someone on hand to give guidance. But it was not your typical birth – a wall of fire and flames and choking from smoke inhalation!
How do you think having a baby is going to affect what is to come for Moira?
It is absolutely life changing.
Can you reveal what happens next?
You will have to wait and see, but Moira is pretty poorly and has lost a lot of blood and there’s a lot of complications. It’s absolutely life-changing for Moira. I don’t think she copes well. It won’t be easy for her, but you’ll just have to see. There’s lots of layers to the storyline.
Do you enjoy working with a baby on set?
He’s a dream, he sleeps! His grandfather is apparently Scottish, so he likes the dulcet tones of my voice! In filming when I’m handed him, he actually opens his eyes on cue. I don’t have any children, so it’s nice to do that and hand him back. I enjoy it.
Would you like Moira and Cain to get back together?
Well, Moira’s not in a good place with him at the moment! It’s lovely to work with Jeff Hordley. We have a great relationship and if that’s the way it goes, then great, but you just never know.
What about a Moira and Pete reunion?
Who knows? I won’t give away too much, you just don’t know which way it’s going to go…
