Hollyoaks police office Ryan Knight’s secret life could be set to unravel when his lover, Kyle, is released from prison and returns to the village to pick up where they left off.
Unbeknown to anyone, Ryan was sleeping with Kyle behind his wife, Amy’s back. It was her discovery about her cheating husband that prompted him to kill her on their wedding night.
Kyle has never been shy about his feelings for Ryan, unaware that he’s a murderer, while Ryan is keen to keep Kyle quiet, but what lengths will he go to?
Here Adam Rickitt, who plays Kyle, reveals all…
What’s it like returning to Hollyoaks?
It’s awesome fun! Every time I get a script through that has Kyle in it, I discover there’s more and more about him that I never realised. It’s like Christmas for me, as it’s like getting to know a character that I really love to play. Also just being at Hollyoaks with the cast and crew, it’s one of the most fun working environments I have worked within.
Were you excited when you heard about the news that you were returning?
Yes, it’s brilliant. Kyle was only originally meant to be in 8 episodes and now it’s been more than double that! I was so lucky when I started, to be working with Ashley Taylor Dawson and Jessica Fox and it was great, but then suddenly this story came through about Ryan and Kyle and their relationship! Even though Kyle has been a new character it’s great that he is linked to so many people in the village already.
What’s Kyle’s motive for returning to the village?
Basically to see Ryan. Ryan is the one who got him sent to prison and somewhat bizarrely, for the last 5 months, Kyle has spent his time thinking about how much he likes him and how much he wants to help him. Kyle is able to relate to Ryan as he is aware of the struggles Ryan is going through with his sexuality.
Are you excited to be working with Duncan James again?
To be honest with you, working with Duncan has been one of the best things about being at Hollyoaks for me. I have known Duncan for years and when I first found out that Kyle was gay, I was like that’s great as long as it isn’t with Duncan as that would be awkward, but when we started working together it was just brilliant. He’s always smiling and being stupid and really cares about what he’s doing so it’s fab to be working together again.
Is there anyone you haven’t worked with before that you’d like to work with now that you’re back?
I think Steph Waring. I have known Steph for around 20 years as we both started in TV at the same time, so it would be ace to do some scenes with her. I like the fact that Kyle has got this darker side to him as well, so it would be good to work with the more evil characters.
Do you hope you have more scenes with Ashley Taylor Dawson and Jess Fox?
Yes definitely. They are so much fun and bring so much improvisation to scenes. There was a scene I had with Ashley before, where he was really creative and the director loved it! It’s great to work with actors like that and they’re also two of the nicest people in the world.
What can you tease that is coming up for Kyle?
Hollyoaks spans on the fact that it’s brilliant at reacting to the audience. The audience reaction to Kyle from the get go was amazing, so I think hopefully if the fans keep loving the character as much as I do, then who knows where it might lead!
