Hollyoaks’ Kieron Richardson has revealed his character is going to “divide the audience” when he decides whether or not to marry Harry Thompson.
Fans will see Harry pop the question to Ste Hay in what would have been a romantic gesture if Leah didn’t nearly swallow the ring – but could that be a sign of what’s to come?
Here Kieron explains why Ste will always put his kids first…
What’s happening with Ste and Harry at the moment?
It’s no secret to the audience that Harry wants to propose to Ste – and after a mishap with Leah nearly swallowing the ring – Ste’s decision is going to divide the audience. With most people wanting Ste and Harry to get married, and the die-hard fans of Ste and Brendan screaming “please don’t do it!”, Ste is not going to take any of this into account when his main focus is his children. To be honest, if you look at any marriage in Hollyoaks, it’s probably best just to stay lovers – even good old Tony and Diane have had their fair share of mishaps during their marriage, and let’s not even get started on Frankie and Jack and what she did with Ziggy! I think it’s safe to say that the children come first, and they’d live a happier life just being blissfully in love without getting married.
Is Ste beginning to put all his love into the kids, forgetting about Harry?
I think any human being is going to put their children before their relationship. Even though relationships are important, children change your perspective on things. You have to go with what’s right for the characters, and what’s right for Ste at the moment is fighting for his children.
What advice would you give Ste about his relationship with Harry?
Personally, I would tell Ste to lighten up on Harry. He’s only trying to help and as an outsider looking in, Harry doesn’t understand Ste’s fight for his children because he isn’t a father himself. Even though Harry caused uproar with the Ryan and Mercedes video, he was only trying to do the right thing. My advice would be lighten up, and if he gave Harry the chance, he might be able to keep a smile on Ste’s face.
Are you going to miss Ashley when she leaves Hollyoaks and what will you miss about her?
I’ll mostly miss the history between us and the fact that when I look at her face, she reminds me of the moment I got my big break in the show which is a happy memory. The fact that I’m going to have to look at that face, professionally, for the last time freaks me out! But if there’s one thing that Ashley’s good at, apart from baking cakes… it’s keeping in contact. It’s also so weird that the time is fast approaching, when we’ve known about this story for a very long time.
Cameron has given Ste a hard time in the past, how does Ste feel now he’s finally behind bars?
Ste should be screaming, “Why did nobody listen to me?”… I think that Hollyoaks village can rest for now. There isn’t a serial killer on the loose anymore, but in this village there could be another killer just around the corner…
Do you think that Ste will ever get a happy ending?
I think that Ste desperately deserves a happy ending after everything he’s been through, but the drama is so high in Hollyoaks that if you were happy all the time, it wouldn’t make very good viewing. So for now, I’m sure Warren can keep putting smiles on his face, as well as his hot, sexy boyfriend Harry, his kiddy-winks and the odd spray tan.
What is it like working with someone who you have to be horrible to on screen?
Scarily, I find it quite easy. But not because I’m a horrible person deep down, it’s because all of the actors are so far away from their characters in real life, it’s quite easy to tell the difference and distance myself from what we film. I might be screaming in Ashley (Amy) or Duncan’s (Ryan) face one minute, then the next we’re posing for a photo on Instagram and arguing over what is the best filter.
You have recently announced that you and Carl are having twins, what are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about making what I thought was the unachievable, a reality. And having a family unit and being able to share a love with these little things that I never dreamt was a possibility.
Have you bought anything for them yet?
Our mums have done most of the buying so far. We wanted to wait to see whether we needed to buy pink or blue, but now we know we can buy both colours, as we’re having our very own Prince and Princess. I’ve had the best training ever with little Leah and Lucas, although we won’t be calling the twins Leah and Lucas – that would be weird.
Other than having two new additions to your life, what would you like to achieve in 2017?
It’s a really crazy, busy time at the moment: Amy’s death is coming up, we’re testing out prams and trying to open a new business, so I just want to enjoy these things and appreciate what I know is happening before asking for anything else – I don’t want to be greedy.
